Early Music Ensembles

The Marais Project is one of the few professional ensembles in

Australia based around the viola da gamba.  It was founded by viola da gambist

Jennifer Eriksson in 2000 with the aim of performing the complete works

Of the great French Baroque gambist and composer, Marin Marais.  Although

maintaining its focus on Marais, the group has expanded its repertoire

to include collaborations with art forms such as dance and poetry, joint

concerts with World Music ensembles such as Mara!, and commissioning

new works by Australian composers.  Former Sydney Morning Herald music

critic Fred Blanks recently included Jennifer Eriksson in his list of Sydney's

"20 greatest musicians".  Information, ticket and CD sales at:

Since 2000, the Society has a proud record of achievement in serving

the needs of players in Australia and New Zealand by holding workshops

and producing both a regular newsletter and a journal 'Chelys'. The main

activity is the annual 4 day Easter Viol School held at various locations

around Australia, supplemented with other 1 and 2 day workshops in

Sydney, Melbourne and other centres. For details of these events and

of the instrument from medieval to modern times. The Society provides

opportunities for recorder players throughout Sydney and surrounding districts to meet and play.

The Society supports other associations with similar aims.
